Smarter 2D Barcode Checks Are Here—What You Should Know
Overview: New ISO updates mean 2D barcodes are now graded more precisely—using decimals, not just whole numbers—giving you clearer, more reliable results. These changes help catch small print issues early, improve GS1 compliance, and reduce rejected labels. If you’re using an Axicon 15000 verifier, Intermax can upgrade your software for free (if still certified). It’s a quick step to stay compliant and avoid barcode problems.
At Intermax, we’re always looking ahead—especially when it comes to barcode quality and compliance. If your business prints or scans 2D barcodes, there’s an important update you need to know.
The ISO/IEC 15415:2024 and ISO/IEC 15416:2025 standards have just been released, and they bring smart improvements that make barcode verification results more accurate, consistent, and aligned with real-world scanning conditions.
We’ve already rolled out support for these changes in the Axicon 15000 Series Linear and 2D Verifier Software (version 8.0)—and we highly recommend upgrading now to benefit from these enhancements.

What’s New in the ISO 2D Barcode Standards?
Barcode verification standards are regularly updated to keep up with how barcodes are used in real life—especially in busy supply chains and retail settings.
Here’s what the new standards bring:
- Continuous Grading for 2D Codes
- Previously, 2D barcodes were graded using whole numbers. Now, grading is measured to one decimal place—just like linear barcodes since 2016.
- This means more precise scores and better visibility into minor print issues before they lead to barcode rejections.
- Improved Contrast and Threshold Calculations
- The new system uses a refined method for measuring contrast and determining thresholds. This leads to more stable and consistent results, especially helpful if your labels vary in lighting or material.
- New Grading for Print Growth
- Print growth happens when barcodes expand slightly during printing—especially with thermal or high-speed printers. The updated standard now includes a specific grading metric for this, giving you better insights into your print process.
- Modulation and Reflectance Margin Combined
- Two important factors—modulation and reflectance margin—are now calculated together. This provides a clearer picture of how well your barcode performs when scanned.
- Alignment with GS1 2025 Specifications
- Data-checking plugins have been updated to match the latest GS1 General Specifications, so your barcodes meet the requirements of major retailers and suppliers heading into 2025.
